BHS: New rider training and assessment
2 hours training, 30 minute assessment
If you have little or no experience on a motorcycle with manual gears, this is the training option for you. With a full two hours of comprehensive training before taking the basic handling skills test straight after, you’re setting yourself up to pass.
This session will introduce you to the controls of a motorcycle, how to move off, ride slowly in a straight line and stop safely. Also covered is riding through a curve, changing gears, use of indicators, when and how to do a “lifesaver” check, riding alternating curves (figure of eight), parking and stopping in an emergency. The training will cover the tasks required for the Basic Handling Skills Assessment. At the conclusion of the training, if ready, you will attempt the Basic Handling Skills Assessment. You are welcome to bring and use your own bike and equipment, but the motorcycle must be roadworthy, Learner Approved and of course you must have a trailer or a licensed rider to bring it to the testing location.
The appointment time includes approximately 2 hours of training, conducting the Basic Handling Skills assessment, plus certificate (for successful candidate).
Detailed information on the criteria for testing is available online:
The appointment will proceed irrespective of weather conditions, unless the assessor deems the conditions unsafe. The candidate is expected to arrive prepared to complete the assessment. The candidate is required to wear long sleeves, long pants and sturdy, covered footwear (i.e. completely covers the feet). The candidate is required to show photo ID such as a current driving licence or passport.
The candidate (and their motorcycle, if applicable) is required to meet all the applicable legal criteria, including vehicle warrantable condition and fitness to drive (e.g. free from the influence of drugs and alcohol). If the candidate fails to attend, or they (or their motorcycle, if applicable) cannot meet these requirements without delay (less than 15 minutes), the session is abandoned, and appointment fee is forfeited.
